Gurrumul is set to challenge, excite and surprise fans with his new musical offering, the TRIBE2tribe electro tour, which will take place in the new year.

A distinct departure from the acoustic, traditional and Gospel songs featured on recent albums, Gurrumul has begun to explore the “dance” world of mainstream genres, and combines Yolngu (North East Arnhem clans) songs with the “club” style of music he has grown up with. . It is essentially Electro Trad Music (ETM), the fusion of Electro sounds and song forms with Traditional Indigenous songs.

Gurrumul’s musical apprenticeship started at 15 years old, when he was invited to play drums for Yothu Yindi in Hong Kong. For the next seven years, commencing in the late 1980’s, Gurrumul travelled internationally, indulging in the most heavily produced and remixed music environments that existed. The Filthy Lucre remix of ‘Treaty’ was one of the most commercially successful remixes in Australia at the time, and the iconic house piano line that still resonates strongly today, was the work of Gurrumul (as were many other musical parts of that successful project and the album ‘Tribal Voice’).

Gurrumul loves the sound of highly produced house, dance and club as much as tough dry manikay – which comprises didgeridoo clapsticks and vocals sung by him and many other members of his family on the beaches and camp sites across North East Arnhem Land.

Listen out for the most powerful music Australia has been producing for thousands of years, bringing Australian traditional stories and songs to mainstream Australia, from February next year.

‘Warrk’ is a taste of what’s currently in progress, a traditional song, about the black crow – the universally iconic bird that is important to Yolngu people, especially Gurrumul’s mothers’ clan, The Galpu clan.
