D’TOUR 2015: Celebrating the creative and cultural connections between Dili and the Top End
For one balmy night in December, the sounds of Timor Leste and Northern Australia come together with the distinctive voice of Ego Lemos, the moves and grooves of Tiwi Islands’ B2M, the sweet soul of Katherine’s Serina Pech and poignant song writing of Larrakia elder June Mills.
In an exciting cultural celebration, this year’s D’Tour kicks off the festive season on Saturday 5th December at Darwin Entertainment Centre. Now in its fourth year, D’Tour 2015 boasts its largest musical footprint yet.
Award-winning musician, singer songwriter and environmental troubadour Ego Lemos plays his fourth D’Tour show, with folk-inspired melodies and soulful singing performed primarily in his native Tetum. With comparisons in style to Gurrumul, audiences are sure to be uplifted and inspired by Ego’s musical stories about Timor Leste, and his life’s work to promote conservation in his homeland.
Tiwi band B2M will round off an outstanding year with D’Tour. Following critical acclaim for their debut album “Home”, tours to Western Australia and Queensland, a fan-filled performance at Barunga and now back in the studio for album number two, 2015 is a standout year for the Tiwi boys. B2M’s Tiwi Club/R’n’B inspired beats and sounds guarantee a great dance floor experience.
Prepare to be wow-ed by Katherine lyricist Serina Pech. This young singer songwriter has a voice and style that captivates. Original, quirky, heart-felt and enchanting, Serina released her first single “Sugar Muffin” earlier this year, and it’s just a taste (literally) of even sweeter things to come.
Bringing these fine musicians together from across the North, D’Tour 2015 is thrilled to showcase one of Darwin’s first ladies of song, June Mills. With an ability to connect and inspire, June’s music reflects the environment in which she lives, the people, landscape and the stories of her country.
It is these universal themes that connect the artists of D’Tour 2015. The D’Tour concept was originally developed in 2011 by Skinnyfish Music and Ego Lemos, who not only boasts an international music career, but has travelled the world sharing his knowledge of permaculture-based revitalisation in communities.
With two D’Tour concerts in Dili (2011, 2014), Skinnyfish Music’s Mark Grose says this is Darwin’s opportunity to witness a joyous celebration of similarities and differences within the region.
“There are so many cultural and creative similarities to enjoy, and differences to learn from through D’Tour. Not to mention a fantastic night of world class entertainment for everyone.”
